# Vincent S. Cojot, openlook@NOSPAM4cojot.name (remove "NOSPAM4") # Revision 1.0b3, Thu Sep 28 21:05:22 CEST 2006 # Revision 1.0b2, Tue Jan 24 17:29:55 CET 2006 # Revision 1.0b1, Thu Apr 21 18:05:02 MEST 2005 About this package: ------------------- The OpenWindows (c) Augmented Compatibility Environement for Solaris 9 and 10. Abreviated to "OWacomp" in the rest of this document for the sake of clarity. If you are using Solaris 9 or Solaris 10 and you are missing the older OpenWindows Deskset environment, then these packages are for you! If you need to compile XView/OLIT/DevGuide applications on either Solaris 9 or Solaris 10 then these packages may be of some help as well. Support Notice: --------------- Although most of the binaries provided here are (c) SUN Microsystems Inc., the OpenWindows environment is unsupported on Solaris 9 or 10. Please don't bother SUN about this. If you need to report something, send e-mail to openlook@NOSPAM4cojot.name (remove "NOSPAM4") and the author will do its best to fix it if that's repairable. Supported Systems: ------------------ - Solaris 9 for Sparc and i86pc. - Solaris 10 for Sparc and i86pc. What is included: ----------------- OWacomp is mostly a re-packaged version of: - Solaris 8 OpenWindows SUNWol binary packages and patches. - Extra XView tools used by the author over the years and that others might be interested in. (olvwm, dumptool, disktool, rootmenu, etc..). Suggestions are welcomed if you'd like to see this list expanded. What is not included: --------------------- - The source code to the original OpenWindows binaries is (c) SUN Microsystems Inc. and is not available. Please note that the author never had access to that source code and as such the rebuilt packages are only what they are: rebuilds of packages consisting of packaged binaries built by SUN Microsystems Inc. - The source code to some of these applications (dumptool, rootmenu) is under NDA with the author and will not be provided. - The source code to the other applications (xvset, olvwm, pantool, disktool, etc...) is available in the SUNWolsrc package. (Release 1.0b3) Download URL: ------------- For now all we have is: http://www.freshmeat.net/projects/owacomp (Project Page) http://www.freshmeat.net/projects/owacomp (Download) Installation/Upgrade Procedure: ----------------------- As root do: # unzip -q -d OWacomp*zip # cd /`uname -p` # ./upgrade_packages.sh Uninstallation Procedure: ------------------------- As root do: # unzip -q -d OWacomp*zip # cd /`uname -p` # ./remove_packages.sh Integrity Check Procedure: -------------------------- As root do: # unzip -q -d OWacomp*zip # cd /`uname -p` # ./check_packages.sh (No error should pop up) Test Platforms: ----------------- - SunBlade 150, XVR-600, Solaris 10 01/06 (U1). - SunBlade 2000, XVR-1000, Solaris 10 01/06 (U1). - Sun Ultra 2, UC3D, Solaris 9 09/03 (NFS mounted $HOME) - Sun Ultra 5, PGX64, Solaris 10 FCS, Solaris 10 01/06. - Solaris 10 x86 06/06, VMWare Server virtual machine on Dell Dual-Xeon Precision. Files Modified by Installation: ------------------------------- Unlike the original SUNWol* packages, these packages modify exactly -two- files on Solaris 9 or Solaris 10 (This was one of the two reasons why I started to repackage the SUN OW binaries, the other being ease of future maintenance). The modified files are: - /usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias where the 'olcursor' and 'olglyph' aliases were missing from Solaris 9 and 10. - /usr/openwin/lib/Xinitrc (if it exists and has 'olwm' in it). Disclaimer: ----------- I am doing this rebuild as a personal pet projet and I am sharing it with others on the Internet in the hopes that this will be helpful to people who would like to keep using OpenWindows under Solaris 9 or 10. I have not asked SUN for permission to redistribute their binaries because I could not find who to ask (perhaps members of the OpenSolaris Advisory Board) but if you have a better idea or even better an e-mail, please contact me. Using these packages should be pretty safe but I hereby disclaim any responsability in what could happen to you, your computers or your company if you (mis)use them. ------------=========== HAVE FUN ==========--------------
